![]() The main story is still action-y if only doing that and taking about 20-30 hours on 1st play through which is pretty standard. Which even depends if playing only the main story or doing optional stuff and what optional stuff. The same can be said about the platforming, exploration, puzzling and combat balance. All melee skill set is completely for the flashy and easily phased out by using the shotgun properly and before shotgun is given there's no enemy that needs a point blank shot. In fact shotgun blast cover for: axe skills, dodge kill/counter skills. Like I like to do: axing someone to death is an immensely satisfying thing to do.but blasting them away with the shotgun it's about a dozen times more powerful and practical. It's not an RPG so skills and gear are largely irrelevant outside of what the main story provides: as said and this is done too in TR and RotTR skills are mostly accessibility stuff or flashy moves that the basic possibilities already cover. Your problem is simply the game is not what you want it to be and calling it bad design. removing 'press X to not die' grab saving prompts or survival instincts related). Also skills for doing flashy impractical stuff and other skills aimed to improve accessibility(ex. Most relevant ones like in item bonuses are QoS skills and the skills that are given by main story progression. Skills are far more than for combat: in fact there's not that much combat skills. TR was mostly the main quest with a few 5 minutes optional stuff sprinkled around, so it's slightly different. Outfits are for the looks, which fits a non-RPG game: most combat benefits don't matter much and higher difficulties make them matter even less. So yes, like you pointed out, this game suffers from such ''contradictive'' design, and it seems to be more and more widespread in games - they try to introduce a bunch of stuff, just for the sake of adding stuff - basically ''bloatmechanics'' - it gives the illusion of content, but in the end, it makes no sense and is contradicting itself, so there is no added value - it is like computer bloatware, or those over-engineered bags - it may have 150 features but if people end up using only 10 of them, there's a lot of diminishing return and it becomes lost value rather than added value Sure, leveling up may heal you for 350 health, but when your total HP is 40 000, this isn't even 1% heal Many healing elements are fixed amounts, which become insignificant once you upgrade your max HP pool.Upgrades end up costing a LOT of resource, but at a fraction of the benefits, so there is no incentive to actually upgrade after a certain threshold. ![]() Sure, you get Von Croy, but no bonus wheel, no extra reward. You lose the reward wheel AND bonus wheel if you defeat a boss without taking damage.TOMB RAIDER RELOADED itself has a ton of ''contradictive'' design. This disincentivize the use of ACTUAL game mechanics as it punishes players that use. Well, the rewarding system was changed so that you'd lose reward if characters die - no matter if they revive or not. So you can develop legitimate strategies and rosters using revive, right? It is possible to win, but also lose, right? There are anti-revive mechanics to prevent them, etc.Plenty characters have effects when they or allies revive.certain characters can revive when defeated.Or simply mechanics that directly clash against each other, and those mechanics are baseline mechanics.įor example, there's a game where there are multiple ''revive'' mechanics I wouldn't say it is the ''worst'' design I've ever seen - I've seen absolute dogcrap designīut yes, there are many counterintuitive and something I call ''contradictive'' design - where there is artificial incentive to do a thing, but it has no actual meaning or reason to be so.
